GPS: God's Positioning System...Part 2

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: (Exodus 13:21, King James Version)

On a previous blog post "GPS - Part 1", I shared how God is like a GPS in that He sees where we are and where we are going. And so, we ought to trust in Him and seek His direction for our lives.  Looking at Exodus 13:21, we see 3 other truths about God which should prompt us to follow Him as our GPS.

1) God is above us: Just as the pillars of cloud and fire were above the children of Israel, so God is above us. Psalm 97:9 says "For thou, Lord, art high above the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods". God is holy, and His ways are higher than our ways. Though He loves us, He is not like us. Just like Israel, we can be hard-headed, selfish, shallow, materialistic, and overall sinful people. Sometimes we try to bring God down to our level by finding ways to justify how we are. But we can't, because He is above us. God doesn't come down to our level, but He reaches down to pull us up to His.

2) God is ahead of us: The passage says that the Lord went before lead them the way. Anywhere God tells us to go, He goes first. Life can be like swimming a raging river,  crossing an icy lake, or passing over a rickety bridge. But God never tells us to go over it alone...He goes first. God leads from the front and not from the back. That's why our Lord in scripture said "follow me", because He is ahead and leading the way. If you are crossing a bridge of hurt and pain, He has already crossed it. If you are crossing a river of troubled times, He has already crossed it. If you are crossing the icy lake of loneliness and despair, He has already crossed it...and He is waiting on the other side for you.

3) God is always moving forward: When things get scary and uncertain in life, we often want to turn old places, old acquaintances, old ways (like Israel wanted to go back to Egypt). In our weakness, we would rather have hard and familiar (ex. abusive relationships) over hard and unfamiliar, even if it will lead to our promised land. But we can't turn back. If we are following God, then we will move forward because He is always moving forward.

Are you using your GPS...God Positioning System? Don't rely on what you see or what others are doing. Let the Lord be your guide, and He will never lead you astray. Remember that God is above us, ahead of us, and always moving forward. Trust in Him!

Try Jesus!
