What He Offered to Her, He's Offering to You!

John 4: 7-10 "When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, 'Will you give me a drink?" (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?' (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, 'If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.' "

Jesus had a divine appointment that was scheduled before the foundation of the world. He went out of His way, geographically and socially speaking, to keep His appointment. The woman with whom He had the appointment was just another woman at the well to those watching, and even to the woman herself...but not to Jesus. You see, He had something for her...a gift.

He opened up the opportunity to reach out to her by simply talking to her. Because she was a woman and a Samaritan, it was not socially acceptable for Him to do so; she would have been beneath other Jewish men, as Jesus was, and they would have looked down on her if they had looked at her at all. She was just as amazed as everyone else that He spoke to her.

Jesus said to her , "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." He was offering her God's gift! But what was it? What could God's gift be?

Ephesians 2:8 says "For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of your selves, it is the gift of God". God's gift is His grace. His unmerited favor. We are sinners and we think, say and do bad things no matter how hard we try not to, and we deserve to be punished for that. But because God loves us, He forgives us and offers us His grace. He then pardons us of our sins, and Jesus took that punishment on Himself to the cross.

I could go on and on teaching on this scripture, but let me leave you with this. Offered to that woman at the well that day was God's gift of grace, which was wrapped up in Jesus Christ. No matter what kind of life she had lived, how many mistakes she had made, or how much guilt she carried around, Jesus offered her the gift of God's grace. And guess what?!.......What He offered to her, He's offering to you!!
